Check back in January 2022 to see if the LIT Program is available

Harbor Haven offers a program for 16 and 17-year-olds to learn leadership skills while working with high functioning special needs children.  Our L.I.T. program fosters maturity, patience, compassion, perseverance, commitment and dedication - all essential qualities for tomorrow’s leaders to have!  Teens have a fun and rewarding time while serving as a role model for children. Learn as you assist children’s professionals and upper level college students whose mission is to provide an extraordinary summer experience for kids who really deserve it! Powerful college essays are made of the emotions, learning and growth you will have being part of this amazing summer camp, now entering its 25th year.

The L.I.T.s learn how to: take initiative, problem solve and manage conflict, collaborate with and motivate others, gain independence, develop and implement creative ideas, organize, and understand how to be part of a high performing team. Their days are balanced with training, working with camper groups and specialty areas, a community service project, fun activities and awesome trips where they can be peers to our special needs teens. Trips/lunch out are planned at outdoor locations. All trip/lunch locations will be thoroughly vetted by Harbor Haven for health and safety protocols. If there is inclement weather on a trip day, alternative exciting activities will be planned at camp.

L - Learn and practice techniques of positive leadership in group situations

I - Identify and clarify personal values through discussions and activities

T - Take responsibility for assisting campers and for planning and implementing projects and programs

S - Sense of accomplishment and skills development for future employment

Supervision and training are provided by our LIT Coordinator who works closely with each participant to ensure that he/she reaches targeted summer goals. The coordinator will also accompany the L.I.T.s on their trips. In addition, L.I.T.s receive guidance from all members of the Harbor Haven staff. Specialists, supervisors and directors mentor program participants throughout the steps of their leadership journey. All L.I.T.s receive performance evaluations, giving them concrete and valuable feedback on their experience.

L.I.T.s will take breaks (snacks provided), have their own fun camp activities and eat lunch together. Lunch is provided on trip days and Fridays. On other days lunch is available for purchase. (Please see lunch form for enrolled families.) Transportation can be provided in most cases.

L.I.T.s will receive complimentary t-shirts and unique camp bags. An enrollment form with a deposit and an interview are required for acceptance into the Harbor Haven L.I.T. program. The qualifications and requirements for participants include: good physical and mental health, demonstration of leadership potential, willingness to serve others, strong work ethic, positive attitude, good communication skills. Please note: An excellent evaluation at the conclusion of the program ensures a summer position when the participant is 18 years old.
