Harbor Haven group counselors are truly the cream of the crop!
Carefully selected and screened from a large pool of applicants, our counselors are college graduates, undergraduates and young professionals who are inspired and motivated to work with children with special needs. Many have received degrees or have majors in the field of special education or related fields such as speech, occupational and physical therapies, social work, psychology, mental health counseling and other areas of education. Most have come to Harbor Haven having had experience working with special needs children.
Each group at Harbor Haven has a lead counselor, and assistant counselors. The groups are arranged by age and each age division is headed by a supervisor. Occasionally it is determined that a child needs to have a dedicated counselor for focus and redirection. We call these staff members “one/one counselors.”
Harbor Haven is proud to maintain a staff to child ratio of 1:2 for 3-5 year olds and 1:3 for ages 6 and up. As each group follows their schedule, they visit specialty areas where a specialist leads the group in activities along with the help of the group counselors.
