Children learn social skills best in a non-contrived social, structured and facilitated environment.  Harbor Haven provides just that every period of every day with a built-in age and ability appropriate peer group, trained and motivated staff, and countless opportunities to “practice” socialization.  Children attend a more formalized social skills group twice weekly with a social worker, psychologist or other appropriately degreed and experienced professional. Counselor modeling and feedback “in the moment” greatly reinforces and improves peer interactions.

Our program is specifically designed to develop and enhance fine and gross motor development.  In addition, sensory motor integration is part of daily life at Harbor Haven through the wide range of activities.  With a full time OT on the premises, we provide group therapy for ages 3-9 and can provide individual OT for any aged child.

One of the greatest areas of regression during the summer is communication skills.  Therefore our trained staff works with children throughout the day to expand their receptive and expressive language use.  Concepts and vocabulary are enhanced through special events and theme days as well as during regular planned and structured activities.  A full time speech therapist provides speech group time for ages 3-9 and can provide individual speech therapy for all ages. 

In every phase of our program we provide an environment where children are encouraged to improve focus, attention and time on task.  We do this through re-direction, positive reinforcement and when needed, reward systems.  Behavior is greatly improved when children are appropriately engaged, motivated and encouraged in ways that honor, respect and value them.
