Hiring Policy of Harbor Haven

  1. All applicants must submit a completed application, a resume (if you have one) and copies of any applicable certifications and/or licensure.
  2. In the application or on the online application process, you are provided with reference forms for the specific job for which you are applying.  Reference forms should be received prior to an interview being scheduled.
  3. After the application, resume and references are reviewed by the director, a telephone call or email is made to schedule an interview.
  4. The interview includes questions about any gap in employment and any criminal background information.
  5. A candidate who discloses any criminal record is not considered for employment.
  6. Once the interview has taken place, a criminal background check is made before a contract is issued.  On your application form, you are asked to sign a release for Harbor Haven to conduct a background check.  If you withhold permission for us to do so, you will not go forward in the hiring process.  Background checks are made for all new staff 18 years of age and older.  A background check company is used and the National Sex Offender Registry is utilized. 
  7. When you are offered a position, a contract is sent to you along with an I-9 form, a W-4, and a staff medical form. In the rare instance that Harbor Haven hires someone under 18, you are required to submit working papers which can be obtained at the high school in the district in which you live.  They must be properly executed by all relevant parties.  A completed copy must be on file in our office. 
  8. All drivers have a motor vehicle background check done by our insurance company in addition to the new hire criminal background check and National Sex Offender Registry. 
  9. All returning staff undergoes a re-hire interview in person or by phone.  A re-hire application is required with one new reference supplied.
  10. Year-round staff and returning staff undergo an annual check with the National Sex Offender Registry and the criminal background check company every three years.
  11. Returning staff must have a statement notarized that nothing in their criminal history has changed since the last time Harbor Haven conducted a criminal background check.  This is in keeping with the requirements of the NJ Department of Youth and Senior Services.
